Artist Manifesto
Beauty for the sake of beauty. Art that exists to bring joy.
Walter Pater wrote that art’s purpose is “to give nothing but the highest quality to your moments as they pass.” Art should offer a reason to pause, to slow down, to notice.
In my work I relocate the historical techniques and material of high fashion to the realm of art. Peeled away from clothes and the body, I use these age-old techniques to transform physical space. My work is fashion without the person, couture unbound from form, sequins and beads freed to exist as art in perfect isolation.
Artists once aimed to capture the beauty of the world, but the invention of photography called them to explore abstraction. First came impressionism, catching fleeting moments, then expressionism, seeking to convey feeling and concept. Many artists pursued beauty for its own sake, a pure aesthetic pleasure, vibrating as emotion, transcribed onto canvas. This work existed to offer nothing more than pleasure in the eye of the beholder. I see my work as part of this ongoing evolution. I push off the canvas, using the gestures and materials of Haute Couture to create textured abstractions that exist to bring joy. The awe of the runway and the tranquility of the gallery represent two forms of beauty that, through my hands, become one.
My work is an ongoing act of quiet accumulation, repetition, and rhythm, transforming technique and time into rich surfaces that ask you to look closer, to linger and discover beauty that exists for the sake of beauty.
